Saab Receives Swedish Order for Torpedo Guns for Surface Ships

Saab has received an order from the Swedish Defense Material Authority for a new torpedo apparatus for lightweight torpedoes.

According to a Saab press release.
The value of the order is approximately SEK 150 million, and there is a possibility to increase the order quantity. Deliveries will take place during 2023.

The new torpedo unit will be designated Tub m/20 in Sweden and will replace the unit currently in use on Swedish Navy corvettes.

“The new torpedo launcher will improve and demonstrate Sweden’s future ability to use light torpedoes from surface ships, thereby aiding their anti-submarine capabilities.”
Nicholas Kolmodin, head of Saab Underwater Systems.

The tube is designed with future requirements in mind, providing a larger torpedo payload as well as easier and more user-friendly loading and unloading. Saab designed the launch system to provide greater accessibility and the ability to monitor the tube from the naval command and control center. The torpedo launcher was developed when Finland placed an order for a new Saab lightweight torpedo for its Pohjanmaa-class corvettes .
