The vehicle of the month: BMW 1 Series

From its pre-launch phase, the last-named Series 1 set a new order-taking record at BMW as a promise of commercial success. Autovista gives us future values.

With a history of nearly 2.5 million units delivered worldwide, the BMW 1 Series has no blush performance of the first two generations. This is all the more true in Europe, where 80% of these volumes have been registered. The same is true in France, where since 2004, the subsidiary has sold more than 165,000 units, including 17,050 cars, in fiscal 2008, its best business year in France. A must-have in the BMW range, the Series 1 accounted for up to 36.7% of the brand’s sales in France in 2009.

Since that date, the market has evolved and the BMW family too, like the arrival of SUVs, including the X1 which will go up to 20.3% of penetrations in deliveries BMW France in 2018. This being, the Series 1 has never surrendered. Last year, it still won 18% of the mix of the brand (10,362 units). And while sales figures are down in 2019, with a decline of 41.6% (4,094 units), the launch of this third generation, whose deliveries began on September 27, was expected to revive the machine.

12,000 sales in 2020

” We never had so many orders before the launch of a new model, ” said Olivier Philippot , sales manager of BMW France, a few weeks ago. The bar of 1,000 orders requested by Germany was largely exceeded: before the presentations in the network, 1,500 customers had signed a voucher, in concession. ” By the end of 2019, we will be able to deliver more than 3,500 Series 1, ” says the manager. In 2020, the first full year of marketing, BMW France thinks to reach 12,000 sales with this new generation entirely new.

Indeed, the Series 1 says goodbye to propulsion to become a transverse engine traction. A new architecture for the model, but already used by the Munich group for twenty years with the Mini, but also the Series 2 Active Tourer or X1. As a result, the Series 1 adopts the UKL platform and all the technological refinements of the moment, while losing 30 kg. This translates to Series 3 and 5 worthy equipment in the areas of connectivity, infotainment or Adas. Habitability is also growing.

Overall efficiency

Under the hood, at launch, the range starts with 3 cylinders petrol and diesel: 118i (140 hp, 112/118 g / km) and 116d (116 hp, 98 g / km). The 118i is, by the way, the one that records so far the largest number of orders. The diesel offer is complemented by the 118d and 120d equipped with a 4 cylinders developing 150 and 190 hp (108 to 116 g / km). Overall efficiency that should seduce professionals and especially rental companies. Another model, however, should not be the most popular rental, but it is of particular importance. Indeed, the M135i xDrive, which represents 15% of the orders so far, remains the flagship of the range. Finish the 6-cylinder in-line 340 hp, up to a 4-cylinder offering 306 hp and 450 Nm of torque.

The Series 1 is thus in line and is in frontal competition with the Class A 35 AMG (306 hp) and Audi S3 (310 hp). A commercial battle between the three compact German who should also move on the field of rechargeable hybridization, because it is not conceivable that the Series 1 is not declined in 225xe, as the X1 and Series 2 Active Tourer.
